Prompt 180-Continuation

What book or book series did you wish would continue when you were done reading it?

There are so many. I mostly read science fiction and fantasy books, which tend to come in series anyway, and I’m always sad when they end. The longer a series is, the harder it is to let go of the characters and the world they inhabit. If the series is still in the process of being written it’s even more frustrating, but at least I know there will be more eventually (*cough* Rothfuss *cough*).

One series I have loved since high school and have reread at least once is Jane Lindskold’s Firekeeper series. The story of a feral girl raised by intelligent wolves being brought back into medieval civilization and trying to learn how to be both human and wolf really intrigued me. The political intrigue of the court fascinated me and the characters were all so vivid and nuanced. Each book revealed more of the world and I loved going on new adventures with Firekeeper and Blind Seer.

There were six books in total, and the final book was released in 2007. It was a decent ending point, but there was still so much of the world that had been hinted at and I was always sad that we never got to explore it. I started following her fan page on Facebook a few years back and last year she said she was going to write another Firekeeper book. I was so excited! I can’t wait to go on another adventure with these characters!

Another series I wished would have continued despite ending succinctly is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. But Sara, that series was 14 books long, over 4 million words! How was that not enough for you? Well, when a world as large as Jordan’s exists with as many POV characters as it has, a girl sometimes wants more of other characters. And there were entire countries the characters never saw! I want to visit those places too!

So I guess, less than a continuation, I want spinoffs. All the spinoffs. Give me the glimpses of the aftermath for several of the minor characters. Give me the future stories featuring their offspring. Give me new characters in the other parts of the world that were inaccessible to the main protagonists for one reason or another.

I suppose that’s what fanfiction is for after all.
