Prompt 232-Better World

Are you making the world a better place?

I really liked this prompt when I read it on Sunday. I thought for sure I would come up with a fun short story or scene to encapsulate it. Then I forgot about it until this morning when I checked the list to see what was on dock for tonight. I like to read the daily prompt in the morning and let it stew in my subconscious all day.

I don’t know if it’s the prompt or my brain today, but I could not come up with even a simple plot for this tonight. I’ve been sitting here staring at a blank word document for an hour running through interpretations in my head and nothing is clicking. So here I am, rambling on about the prompt, hoping something will spark and give me a seed for a future story, trying to just make the words flow.

One of the ideas that hovered at the edge of recognition earlier today was a literal route. A god remolding the world with his hands to better suit his vision. In a similar vein to that, I thought of a world-as-science-project bit I’d read once upon a time and thought maybe I could write about a cute alien kid or some sort of celestial being crafting better worlds.

I haven’t touched my Galactic Empire story in ages, but that one also popped into my head as a candidate for this prompt. Fae has already explored this concept to some degree, but I thought it would be interesting to read Veralis’s take on the Expansion and see if she believes they are making all worlds better and safer. (Spoiler alert: 99% sure this is exactly what she believes.) I imagined her talking with Jack about her cause, possibly at the start of their partnership. Unfortunately that sent me down a whole other rabbit hole that I am not prepared to dig deep into just yet. I have a lot of questions I need to answer before I can even tackle that.

So yeah, I’m bummed I can’t make the interesting words come tonight. That’s not to say these words don’t count. And anyway, I’ve had a good week on the word count front. Tuesday’s post really bumped that number up for the week. (My benchmark is 3836 words per week to meet my goal of 200k by the end of the year and I hit that weekly marker halfway through this post with 2.5 days left to write.)

In any case, it’s a good idea to write or type out your thoughts about your WIPs so that you can reference them later. Use yourself as a rubber duck if you don’t have one handy or other partner to bounce thoughts off of. This post is serving as my rubber duck, but I’m thinking this is a sign I need to do some more reading tonight. Reading is research for writing after all!

On the plus side, tomorrow is Friday. We survived another week on this beautiful planet. I can’t say with any degree of confidence that I am making this world a better place, but I do hope I’m not making it any worse. One day at a time. Sometimes that’s all we can do.

Have a great night! I’ll see you tomorrow!
