What brings out your nerdy side?
If you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you know what a giant nerd I am. My interests are all over the place and I’m passionate about a lot of those interests to varying degrees. My biggest nerd-jerk reactions, the ones that draw my ear in public making me pop my head like a meerkat looking for the source so I can gush about the thing too, are probably football, anime, and writing.
I will talk all day about any one of those topics and I will leap out of my comfort zone to talk to absolute strangers in public if I hear them talking about any of those topics. Mostly football, because football fans are family and if you hear other football fans talking in public, they will welcome you like a long-lost sister or cousin or nephew. Even if your team is a rival, sometimes especially if your team is a rival, you all share a love of football and that bond transcends even the bitterest of rivalries.
Anime fans are a little harder to approach in the wild. They are certainly a lot more common now—its not quite as repellent to be a fan of anime these days—but a lot of us are still fairly introverted and don’t take kindly to randos coming up to us on the street to discuss the latest episode of Dr. Stone or the latest chapter of Skip! Beat. Of course, once they make themselves known, it’s easy to switch to full otaku mode and jump into discourse and recommendations and such. True story, one of my first days on site in my latest role, my coworker and I spent the entire day talking about our favorite anime and cartoons and basically becoming best friends in an afternoon over our shared love of anime.
Lastly, writers are like cats in that we like our solitude and prefer not to be bothered. We want to read the books on our infinite TBR pile and spend time in our WIPs. We don’t really go out and when we do, there are usually books or, at the very least, other writers involved. But boy, when you get us together, so many stories are shared! So much motivation and encouragement! So much nerding out over our friends’ wonderful books!
Some honorable mentions for my nerdiness include tennis (I’ve only followed professional tennis for a few years so it hasn’t quite reached the same level as my passion for the above), books in general, weather (once upon a time I wanted to be a meteorologist), wolves, and space. What sorts of things are you nerdy about?
I will leave you with a John Green quote on nerdiness because it sums up this prompt neatly. Have a great night! See you tomorrow!
“Nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff. Nerds are allowed to LOVE stuff, like, jump-up-and-down-in-your-chair-can’t-control-yourself LOVE it. When people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is, ‘You like stuff,’ which is not a good insult at all, like, ‘You are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness.”
PS-Like these prompts? Like the short stories I write based on these prompts? Want to show your support? Give the blog a follow! Leave a comment! Buy me a coffee! I put a lot of time and effort into these posts and your support means the world to me! Ok, now go out there and write!
I oddly love reading about your nerdiness!
Does that make me a nerd?
