Prompt 198-Advice

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Not so much advice as inspiration, I once read something to the effect of “We’re all just making it up as we go. No one has it all figured out. Do what makes you happy.” I apply a lot of similar mantras to my writing, especially when I’m having a bad writing day. Kinda like the last two days. Yesterday saw the muse with ADHD. Tonight, time was not on my side.

I ran out of time tonight to come up with a short story for the blog. This week has been weird for my schedule and the earliest I’ve been home has been 5:30. Tonight I was leaving the grocery store at 5:30 and when I got home I still had to make dinner. Additionally, we’re having a potluck at work tomorrow, so I lost most of my evening to preparing a couple dishes for that.

I was going to do a fun piece with “do no harm but take no shit” as the central bit of advice, but I couldn’t narrow down a character/universe to set it in by the time I finally found myself free to write. Then on top of that, my computer blue screened on me as I was getting myself set up. I could have dug out my laptop, but it’s been a few weeks since I’ve been on it and figured it wouldn’t be any faster booting up than my decade-old desktop. Here’s some advice frequently packaged as common sense, always save your work, kids. Not that I had gotten very far when my computer crashed, and Word auto-recovered anyway. Look, it’s the principle of the thing that matters here.

I am sorry I haven’t had anything of substance for you to read the past couple nights. Tomorrow won’t have a short story either, but the content at least should be more interesting than this. Don’t forget to check back to the weekly list to get the last prompt!

That’s all I’ve got for tonight. Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday. This week has been hell. Have a great rest of your night! See you tomorrow!
